O&K company history
The company Orenstein & Koppel (O&K for short), founded in Berlin in 1876, initially supplied field railway supplies such as trucks, switches and tracks. Locomotives, wagons and a large range of construction machinery followed later. These include, above all, excavators. Within a very short time, the first branches were opened in Budapest, Prague and Dorstfeld in 1895. Further branches were established in Buenos Aires, Durban and Johannesburg.
In the post-war period, the company was changed to “Orenstein-Koppel und Lübecker Maschinenbau AG” after a merger with Lübecker Maschinenbau AG (LMG) in 1950. Due to the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the headquarters were moved to Dortmund.
In 1986, O&K acquired the majority of shares in FAUN-Werke. The takeover was of great importance for O&K, as matching dump trucks and large wheel loaders could now be offered in addition to the large hydraulic excavators it had previously manufactured. After the takeover, O&K continued the production of dump trucks, wheel loaders and graders in the three plants.
After the sale in 1998 to “New Holland” (a subsidiary of Fiat, called “CNH Global” from 1999), production in Germany was reduced and gradually relocated to Italy, so that in 2015 there were only 100 employees working in sales.
